Vietnam War 40th anniversary: ‘My mother was never seen again’ – BBC News


Vietnam is commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. On 30 April 1975 the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), was captured by communist troops from the North. During the conflict, millions of Vietnamese on both sides of the conflict died. North Vietnam’s first female war correspondent was among them, killed during a guerrilla operation in central Vietnam. But four decades later, her family is still trying to find out what happened to her – her daughter, Huong Ly, now a journalist with the BBC, shares her story.

Vietnam War Pen Pals Meet 50 Years Later


In 1971, Kathleen Ryan’s fourth-grade class sent Christmas cards to U.S. military fighting in Vietnam. Ten-year-old Kathleen received a letter back from 20-year-old army specialist Dominic Cutalo saying it was a wonderful gift. Kathleen treasured the note for 51 years, wondering if Dominic ever made it back from the war until last month when she found out Dominic would be at a veteran’s event near her home. The two were able to connect, starting a friendship 51 years in the making.
